Did you try that? For me, on the "stable" CSSU, locking it from portrait simply puts it back in landscape.

Not really sure what you're trying to say here, but the N900 is my first ever smartphone, and as long as it serves me well, it will be my only one. So I can't speak from experience with the other...

The ability to modify said settings through the graphical settings interface.

Also, that still doesn't allow one to customize date notation.

For me, installing the latest version of libshiboken1.0 resolved the issue.

apt-get install libshiboken1.0=1.0.3-1maemo1
Or if you use fapman:
fapt-get install libshiboken1.0=1.0.3-1maemo1

As far as I can tell, this beep is not found in /usr/share/sounds, nor can its volume be adjusted.

Bump. This bothers me a lot.

I like to fall asleep with soft radio and the loud beep when an e-mail/IM is received is a serious annoyance.

Yes, that's why I use Netscape Navigator, Outlook Express and RealPlayer on my Windows 98 Pentium 2 computer. It was good enough then, so it's good enough now.

All silliness aside, choice is good....
