Slimserver is another alternative.
I use it to serve up mp3 and flac files to my Ruko soundbridge media player.
I have also successfully connected to it with the N770.

Thanks but I must be missing something. All I see is the '!' character in the upper right of the keyboard - no sign of the '|' pipe character anywhere.

Nope, haven't seen that feature on my 770 with 2MB mobile Kingston. Stable even after modifying memory contents via card reader & windows. I always power down before swapping memory. Am using FAT32....
