I had that same thought. I used the maemo SDK virtual image and that comes with an installed version of EsBox. After a little tweaking you can get this running nicely. There's an emulator that runs when you hit run or debug, that provides a basic simulator of the n900 interface. It's not perfect, but it does give you a fairly good idea of how everything will work.
