Well, well. Reinstallation failed miserably (I possibly shouldn't have used btrfs in the first place), so I wiped the partitions back to ext4 and reinstalled a fresh ubuntu (all glory to daily backups).

Now, "my hardware is apparently not compatible with unity" and I'm left with the standard gnome desktop. So much for testing unity
