Tablet/Mobile is going to replace the Desktop.
The only remnants from the Desktop era might some of the perhiperals: Monitors, Mice, Keyboards etc.
You will dishout your quadcore/hdmi/usb pocketable device, connect it to the said perhiperals and voila, instant Desktop.
Oh yes, it's such a fast train out of desktopville that only the iPad is making profit and everyone i know thinks tablets are pointless. Such a fast train that only Android and iOS have tablets, while the "big players" you mention like Dell and Acer as yet don't have them, and do you really think people are going to ditch OS X, Linux or Windows for an Android tablet? No, of course not. None of the tablets even do multitasking like a computer does yet. Your suggestion is the same as the Mini Mac, a small portable computer that can be plugged into a monitor, which was hardly a runaway success. With the way phones are going, people will just use phones in the way you're suggesting. You're off your head if you think they'll replace real computers though, no chance. Quad core blah blah blah, what about 1TB storage and 8GB RAM and a DVD player/rewriter? which is what a lot of computers come with now.

Google are always pushing something, not all of their innovations get embraced by the public, so why mention Chrome OS? The Cloud has pros and cons, i use skydrive as i mentioned, but i wouldn't rely solely on it, ever. You seem to be one of those baffling people who thinks that when something new and popular comes along it will eradicate older technology. It's only now that some people are replacing their landlines with mobiles for crying out loud
