More content blocking on rooted devices! This time it's blockbuster:

This could be the beginning of a trend.

This move can only increase the rate of piracy, as this (arguably small) group of users will get their content fix using other channels.

What's most interesting is the DRM software (Widevine) seems to deploy to Windows as well, which is pretty much a fully 'rooted' system, as well as OSX. In other words, if the software works as it should, I don't see the benefit of excluding rooted Android users.

Additionally, installing the APK on a non-rooted system, then rooting it or mounting the FS image, will give access to the APK. Either way, the APK can be easily exposed, and the content accessed. If they're worried about reverse-engineering or de-compiling the code, I don't think this will help much.

Perhaps it's one of those things that just sound good to executives but amounts to false security.
