Joining one of these ecosystems has many benefits, but unfortunately requires also adopting one of the operating systems. i think that the choice of m$ over Google (even though Google apparently offered quite some money w/ the deal) was primarily because w/ ANDroid, NOKIA would have had a much harder time getting a(-ny?) say in OS matters.
many ANDroid devices have customized UIs, but that's not what NOKIA is (primarily ?) interested in; they want to be able to add new HW features and that requires the ability to tweak the kernel, something Google seems to be unwilling to allow
(see the argument about features the ANDroid developer @ Google added to the kernel & which was not sanctioned by the kernel community...)
m$ was the only available choice, the least worst solution...

MeeGo is trademark of the Linux foundation; if Intel doesn't like where it is going, THEY will have to think of a new name (or exhume Moblin >:-)
