not entirely new, and nothing I contributed directly, but some of you hardcore hackers might not yet know about nevertheless -

wireshark can listen to low level protocol of modem, called ISI.

This is based on Klaus mrmoku Kurzmann's latest and probably most evolved version of the ISI dissector plugin
