I am afraid that history directly contradicts you. Carriers have always shown a notorious disregard for the needs and opinions of their customers and I don't see that somehow changing.

Think about n-gage, Wi-Fi, voIP, dual SIM and particularly about who it was that kicked Nokia out of the US market some years ago (yes, the carriers).

In the mobile world, Apple is way bigger than Microsoft and look at what has happened with the SIM-less iPhone5. Hey, Google is huge too and remember the great "success" the Nexus One was.
