polycarbonate is basically just really tough and light plastic. if the layer above the screen is all in the same piece too, this phone will be pretty indestructible(they make bulletproof windows out of polycarbonate, for example)

It will laso be very lightweight and also cheaper to manufacture than glass and steel

also, it precludes the need for plastic end caps like in nokia other metal phones
