.... what exactly is your point?

1. People don't put apps on desktops because they're in folders and pulldown/up menus called 'Apps'?

2. 'people don't need them on their phones', because phones are used in exactly the same way, situation and manner as desktops?

uh, no.

English isn't my first language either and I think our linguistic skills are comparable; so I don't think that's a valid excuse to be vague here

The other point was that the ecosystem is being paid for in many ways, the phone maker doesn't need to set up anything. So if, say, Netflix want my money, they will make the app not Nokia. They will store the package, the installation faq etc. like it's being done with desktops.
Sure, but if you want your ecosystem to be included (and has a chance to be used) in 100% of those devices, then it has to be preinstalled on the device by the maker.

Otherwise you will have to face an uphill battle to advertise and recruit the customers to board your ecosystem.

You've missed the point, please reread.

If a FOSS ecosystem is already preinstalled on said device (say, the N9) which the users can easily access, then we can bombard them with messages and 'public service announcements' when they browse the repositories and grab packages off it.
