You might be ignorant and/or uninformed, but many *nix distributions have already used this software distribution model for awhile; those based on Debian come to mind (maybe you've heard of Ubuntu? you can google that) and the BSDs.

Also, mobile devices will eventually converge with desktops and get rid of the 'appstore' nonsense. It's only a matter of time.
Afaic it's the other way around: mobile devices have copied 'features' of their precursor (desktop, et al) from their inception, so the convergence of mobile and desktop appstores is inevitable.
