The widgets should activate some programs at the interval to get updates. I believe there'll be min power consumption just to remind the wingets to self-activate. Sorry, I'm not a tech expert...just logic thinking.

I have a couple of widgets like APNews and Foreca. My battery lasts only 2 days (I have wifi on at home).
