Ah, that's clearer. Sounds like a defect in your 3.5 jack, most likely the "bumper" that secures your plug is faulty. The fault could be your earphones, but you've already debunked that possibility.

Opening will indeed void your warranty (but only if Nokia finds out you've opened it). OTOH, Nokia's repair-and-return times are, depending on where you live, between awful and abominable so, if you're a confident screwer (har har har) you might give it a go anyway. There is supposed to be a guide on opening your N800 somewhere, but I don't know where.

Edit: Or you could try twisting it.
