Yes, Ubuntu LTS (10.04?). I'm pretty sure it used to work, so something must have been broken in an update.

Anyway, the thread you link to provides some tips that seem to improve things somewhat (specifically the rmmod/insmod instructions). It's quite dissappointing that this has stopped working, even in LTS :/
