Open a terminal window and run /usr/liibexec/navicore-gpsd-helper
Then tell MaemoMapper to use local gpsd.
Definitely a workaround, but it works great.

EDIT:
Just saw the post about selecting "bluetooth" with a blank address - it WORKS! WooHoo!
Soooo much easier than the commandline kick-start!
