I think people should read about HTC and how they came to be. The whole idea of HTC was to make handheld mobile computers based on Win CE/Win Mobile. They did good, and are now one of the top smartphone manufacturers. Android has of course made HTC soar like they are doing now, but that (soaring) didn't start until 1-2 years ago and it is only during the last year they have really grown.

In the mid 2000, there where two options; Symbian (Nokia, SE, Samsung) and Win Mobile (HTC, HP, Samsung). HTC had many names back then like dopod, Q? and whatever.
