Actually, you're wrong here, at least with Maemo Mapper v2.x. In the "Auto-Center" tab of the Settings dialog, you can specify which direction the auto-center (and auto-rotate) will orient itself. For example, if you specify "Right", then you will get a "Portrait"-like map display, where your heading always points "right" (which is up if you rotate the device 90 degrees counter-clockwise).

Unfortunately, the menus and text panels don't work in portrait mode, but the map itself can work exactly as you described it ("more road ahead and less on either side of you").
