Actually there is a command, gconftool-2 which actually pulls your active desktop.
the only problem is it just lists the wallpaper and not the screenshot
However i found something online from a N900 dev(?) who created a qt file which can take a screenshot of current desktop using gconftool and screencapture-tool (a tool which we have to install)
You can use this to pull a screen shot and save it in theme folder with the file name in .ini file.

I was analyzing it yesterday. I will see if i can pull something out of it. Am a learning dev too. So it will take some time.
Sakya. Will you be able to take a look at it and see if its of any use?
