I managed to compile the latest version of gphoto2 and use it with VUmeter as sound trigger with my nikon D3100.
The problem is that there's a lag of 1-2 sec due to the camera drivers loading for each shoot, so high speed photography is impossible

It's just a cool thing to clap your hand and have your camera shot!
