Try opening HAM and then click on the update thingy, always wait till the throbber stops throbbing before doing anything, and then close it. Also rebooting somtimes help. Oh and if you got that update notification thing flashing, check the updates it is offering to dismiss it (don't need to update just yet, can leave for later).
