Also try to:

Take the battery out of the device.
Slide out the N900 keyboard.
Insert microUSB cable into the device but not the battery.
Press and hold `u' button on the device with one hand.
Insert the battery into the device in the other hand whilst maintaining one hand on the `u' key. Don't worry about the battery cover, that is not important until you can get the device into flashing mode.
