Alright, I found out the real problem. It worked at home but not at work. Then we picked up a wireless router with a Sprint broadband laptop card to give us wireless access to the cell network, and that worked too. After talking to the networking guys, my work's wireless controller was blocking the ports we needed to connect to the accounts, which would explain why we could connect to the internet and Skype, but not Google or Jabber.
