Using the app screen as a task switcher would be terrible idea in my opinion.
Yep, the task switcher should remain a central part of the UI. Although the OS should have a setting such that it closes apps by itself (i.e. those who are idle) if there are too many open to make life easier for "normal" users. And a better screen resolution would be nice too, so that the mini-views look better and are readable.

more control (active apps list can be reached from every screen by clicking status, instead of having to swipe to the task switcher screen first).
clicking status is much more annoying. I must say swiping is so effective and easy, especially one handed. Swipe the app away, then if you're not in the task screen just do another (small) swipe. Its effortless and easy to get to the screen you like, without bending your thumb to reach the button at the bottom.

Swipe manager does not improve usability at all IMO.

This is a bit of a frankenstein mix on the N9 while the N900 offers system wide consistency and coherence.
The N9 has more UI elements, e.g. sometimes its the back button and sometimes cancel/save, then there are tabs etc. All of them have a purpose though and are used wisely throughout the OS. With the exception of the maps app which I find super annoying.
