After digging further into this I find that it is indeed a server problem. I did the following as root:

- apt-get install wget (which works fine)
- wget http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p....3-2_armel.deb
- cat libgdbm3_1.8.3-2_armel.deb

The service is temporarily unavailable. We are very sorry for the inconvinience it may cause

Notice the incorrect spelling of inconvenience
