Checked libpurple and telepathy-haze bugtracker. Suppose the error is in telepathy-haze, because libpurple only manages lowlevel connection and not the integration to contacts.

Ubuntu & Debian bugtracker do not list this bug.
Maybe we have to wait for next version of telepathy-haze. Or one of your contacts is causing this by setting strange message / nickname.
