I learnt this, like you, by putting the swap file on the SD card, I also found that the card was not making the best connections to the phone and sometimes after knocking the phone the SD card would have to reconnect, this was enough to loose the swap file and the phone would reboot, so now I leave the swap file on the emmc instead.
