Yes the android mame does use an older version (0.37b5) but the roms it does support do run much smoother no stuttering or sound issues compared to newer versions.

This is what i have been going on about in the mame thread, if an older version of mame, 0.37b5 for example was ported to maemo it would give us a cleaner and smoother mame experience even on stock n900's.

Flandry has done a great job porting mame to maemo and it is well appreciated. but it would be nice to have a smoother mame experience which runs as it was supposed to.
