A waiting feature is already implemented: Any character that is neither a digit nor *, # will introduce a pause of one character. A longer pause can be achieved by adding a couple of short ones.

Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the problem with the "1". Perhaps you can try to adjust your volume. If it is too high, the tone may be clipped resulting in recognition errors.
