For what it's worth, I compiled nuttcp and did a speed test using my own server, and obtained:

(downlink) nuttcp-r: 4.6126 MB in 21.56 real seconds = 219.08 KB/sec = 1.7947 Mbps
(uplink) nuttcp-t: 2.8750 MB in 20.01 real seconds = 147.12 KB/sec = 1.2052 Mbps

This was on AT&T in a 3G area (i.e. no HSPA+). Not terrible, but nothing great either.
