I just plugged it in while it's still on (Knuckles are getting bloody from all the wood-knocking :P )
Electronics can be funny critters. I have a popular handheld Ham radio that needs the DC cord plugged in before the wall wart is plugged in. Many reports of damage if done the other way around.
