nokia was and is still a leader in number of innovations brought to smartphone market(if you ignore nokias WP part that is in no way innovative and is a step back) and is still highly competitive(with symbian based 808 for instance, not WP nokias)

It can be if you do it faster better and cheaper than others. But that was not what I meant here.

Nokia was market leaders and had the money and sales to be innovative. But the have dropped the ball and Samsung has it atm. what I mean is that they are market leaders in smart phone segment. They have galaxy note and galaxy beam and no other can compete here. They have tablets in several sizes and they have increased the sales of parts to apple. They support several OS and working on a new one. Nokia have several OS but struggling with all of them. It's not about the OS. It's about the product.

All vendors can do innovative phones. Just build something crazy. But it won't sell, you must believe in it and have the economical muscles to back it up for years. Nokia don't have it anymore.

I never use innovative without adding usable and and profitable right after. You are not innovative if you cant profit from it!
