There is actually a hack for this issue... you hack off your left thumb.

Seriously though, I have the exact same issue. Are you telling me not one human hand picked this damn thing up before finalizing the design?? It is impossible not to cover it (maybe it is just me). The light sensor would be perfect positioned in the middle of the top bezel. They could have even left the sensor where it is on the board and run a fiber optic line. That would have worked just as well.
