If you picked the sword (or the warhammer) before version 0.1.8 it's the effect of the bug (objects were saved with a wrong property and so are reloaded from your save file with that wrong value).
If you start again and pick the item with version 0.1.8 it should work fine (it works for me, tested now).

Hunting should work fine, there are places where the text (or the footnotes that I removed from the original text) says that it's not possible to hunt.
Do you remember exactly what section you were?
