What i dont understand is how the two sides seems to ONLY go to both extremes, so im not sure which to believe..

I suggested it was a matter of time of purchase, like the xbox 360, whereas earlier models of the 360 crashed and broke, but the newer ones had all the kinks knocked out.. is this true with teh N800, or not? because I was thinking of purchasing two within the next two
weeks for me and my gf, but like I said im really skeptical to the general stability of the machine.

Perhaps im thinking its worse than it really is. perhaps im misunderstanding the people who are having problems, and more specifically what kind of problems they are having?

the only 5 reasons i'd want are the sme reasons advertised for its use, with the exception of one:

1) Video chat ( and I keep hearing back and forth that its good, and its not, and it works, and it doesnt.. well, i'd settle for something thats not good AND works.. do i have that with the N800, at least?) all im asking is at least a 20fps, 15 at least, chat session.. do I have it?

2) one of my main reasons: MUSIC. only mp3 format..

3) occasional movie here and there.. just the basic avi, wma and mpeg

4) the sketch program for taking notes in class this function works correctly.. right?

5) the only option not necessarily advertised: games. Quake, Doom.. Snake? simple stuffs..

6) INTERNET.. basic stuff: myspace, hotmail (hotmail works.. right?), youtube MAYBE.. im not a youtube addict like my GF.. and those are it. Maybe deviant if that works.. idk how opera operates, haha

aside fomr the basic stuff on the net, i've heard and actually READ that this thing supports MSN, yahoo, AIM and Gtalk.. are all these fully capeable programs? im not into modding much of anything aside from downloading seperate apps for the games, and maybe a few gps things or note taking-type apps. I'd love to IM with this thing, even if it wasnt any of those.. as long as theres IM. Do I have that? Can the N800 deliver on that?



now is that too much to ask of this little wonder? or am I in for a wild goose chase of the game of buying/returning?

The hardware is pretty solid, and that shouldn't be a problem for you.

1. video chat currently works well only between n800s via google talk. There are also a couple of beta-level solutions for Gizmo and MSN that will allow some limited video chat from n800 to PC. I'm sure it's being worked, but currently the cam is kinda pointless, IMO.

2. There are a variety of great music programs for the n800, which will play mp3 or ogg or what-have-you. The built-in media player works just fine, but Canola2, Kagu, UKMP, and Mediabox all have prettier interfaces. It's a great MP3 player.

3. Movies work and look great on the tablet, though you'll have to convert them to something a bit more n800-friendly to play them with the default media player. You can install mplayer (and you may have to if you want to use one of the aforementioned media players), and play pretty much anything you can play on your PC, even without converting it (though you may want to just to save space).

4. I believe so. i don't use it much, so I really can't comment much on it's capabilities. For heavy note-taking, I'd recommend a bluetooth keyboard, though.

5. I don't really play games, but there is a selection of good "board-type" games for the tablet. Don't expect miracles in terms of graphics, however, since it's really not built around that. if you want to play games, a PSP or DS Lite is a much better choice.

6. Internet. I've been to very very few sites that don't work. most of them are because they use Activex or other oddball stuff. Youtube is certainly usable, and myspace, facebook, hotmail, gmail, googlewhatever, all are very very useable. It's obviously better to go to those sites on a real computer, but the n800/OS2008 combo will work just fine. Keep in mind, some of those sites are very complex, and might be a bit slow on the n800, merely because they have 400+ objects to load up from time to time. You're going to get the "real" web page as well, and not the often dumbed-down mobile pages.

Following the instructions, it's easy to add native support for AIM, MSN, Yahoo, IRC and ICQ. I'm sure this support will be forthcoming in a new OS release, but in the meantime, it doesn't take much to add it by hand. The tablet supports jabber and google talk out of the box. It will download your contacts, and allow fully functional chat (though I don't know about sending files and such).

If you don't want to tinker with the built-in application (the mod is still sort of technical) you can just install pidgin and that should support all of those protocols.

there is a gps-type application called "maemo mapper" which you can easily install, and is a really great app for that. There's a variety of other applications that are easy to install. if you WANT to stay on the bleeding edge, you can. You don't have to, however, and if you don't want to, it's very easy to install and update applications without ever going to the command line.

You'll be surprised all the little things you think of to do with the tablet. Just remember, that a lot of the "neater" things are still in beta, so expect to have to tinker a bit sometimes if you're not happy with the built-in stuff.
