If the guy asked me "Have you gone to this wiki?", I would've replied "Actually, I didn't know it existed, thanks!".
And then a few minutes later, I would've edited the post with:
"Edit: Well, it seems the wiki doesn't actually solve the problem, but thanks anyways."...

Don't you think that would just avoid all these troublesome situations?
