It wouldn't even ring, there'd just be a long pause & then the message bank service would kick-in.
I've no idea what that's all about, I assume my telco doesn't support 2G/GSM, it may be better with other towers, I've only tested it on the tower used at home.
Plus when it came out of idle it took quite some time for it to switch back to 3G, so I couldn't fast-dial a no. right away, & general usage was a bit sluggish.
I'm yet to try some other things linked-to in this post, if they don't work then I guess I'm screwed.

*the reception bars would usually (not always IIRC) have a red strike through them, & to the right it would say "Emergency calls only".
I have no idea why you have those problems. Guess you have no 2G network there or something. I have not had any problems as long as I used ProfileMatic.

I have stopped using it though since I don't need to toggle on 3G everytime I use the phone. I just toggle myself between 3G & 2G when needed. My phone switches to 3G in like 3 seconds so I barly notice any "downtime" when switching. And I don't really surf with it a lot so I'm on 2G most of the time.

Out at my girlfriends house on the countryside there are no 2G network available only 3G. It does not have any signal issue there though even though I have mostly 0-1 signal bars. There's only two 3G network ID's there and it never hangs there. It's just in town the signal can hang where there are a lot of 3G networks available.

What I have noticed though is that it doesn't drain less battery while on 2G. I have the same idle drain on 2G as 3G which surprised me a little bit.

For my use, I have only lost the signal once in three weeks. Doesn't bother me anymore really.
