That worked for me when I enabled R&D mode. At the top of VMPlayer you should see a bunch of buttons representing resources like the CDROM, etc. The USB device should appear and I believe you have to click on it to allow Ubuntu to see it. At that point it should go from waiting to performing whatever commands you asked the flasher to.
