OK. Apparently the stock kernel doesn't have the cfg80211 module (maybe it's built-in, or maybe it's just not used, I don't know).

One way to get this to work would be to install kernel-power, but the obvious question is first: why do you need to run "ifconfig wlan0 up". Is your WLAN not working?
