OpenVPN requires

1. One comand to generate a simple certificate for each end
2. Just 4 or 5 lines of config at each end.
3. A port forward on home routers.

It doesn't get much simpler than that.

It supports all comms over the route you need including SSH if you really need it and can be configured to wake up the link as you choose.

Certainly less pain than SSH for the extra flexibility.

Reliable and available for nearly every platform, just carry your client config and certificate file with you on usb.

You can change the simple certificate anytime you wish too.
