I think the alarm daemon should run by default.
Took me a bunch of headscratching to get Calendar to ring bells.
Didn't happen until I loaded the standalone KAlarm,
which loaded the daemon, which then autoloaded itself thereafter.

I agree with Powder, Nokia Sans is a good default.
