I've been able to use every doc I've written in the default Notes app in MS Word. While it can't read Word files, you can write docs with it.

doc Reader was just updated for OS2008. It will convert MS Word docs into text or PDF for reading on the ITs.

AbiWord isn't ready yet, but it is being developed. It is close to MS Word functionality and can read Word docs. (Btw, why do I remember having AbiWord installed on mt IT at some point... Oh, well.)
