Damn, should've read up more on it. I suppose it would be possible - but unlikely to be viable - to have two small adapters: one from Micro-USB B to Micro-USB A and one from USB-A Female to USB-A Female. Then you use the stock lead with an adapter at each end ;-)

Alternatively, a custom cable which pipes the pin all the way through, allowing a gender-changer style adapter at the end to ground it or not as appropriate.

This issue of not having to carry 2 cables around means I probably won't bother to buy a "host mode" cable even when I can get one. Using the Nokia cable plus a gender changer and controlling the mode from the command line means I only need one cable (plus the gender changer) and I can either use it to connect devices to the N810 or use it to connect the N810 to my laptop (for example when I want to download a video, convert it on my laptop in my hotel room and copy it to my N810 for watching on a plane later).
Agreed. We just need to add a better USB status bar applet - and find a decent source for the gender changer adapters, and low power Ethernet dongles - all in the UK.

Exciting times...
