To scan, you may need to run

/etc/init.d/mpd start-create-db
as root, but I think it does that automatically the first time...

Anyway, once the directories are scanned, mpd runs automatically in the background. In mmpc, hit the configuration button, and tell it to connect to 'localhost', port 6600. You probably want to check 'autoconnect' so it connects next time you start mmpc. Press 'connect', and it should connect. Configure any other desired settings, then close the configuration window. Open the playlist window to select tracks...
