If you are using CM 10.1 on your Nexus 7 with a kernel that supports Ad-Hoc wifi you will be able to connect to N900 hotspot. I have tried this and it works.

Nexus 7 3G
ROM - CM 10.1 Final
Kernel - TIMUR (Usb-host)
