They could easily open the specs and allow 3rd party Android and other OS vendors to build a rich competitive landscape.

This would put them squarely back on top.

Their hardware has the good looks, but quality control lags behind others. Many LUMIAs were returned due to technical issues, some of them silly such as near proximity sensor malfunction. I myself had to return two units for that. Never a problem with iphone and bought numerous for family and friends. So WP is also a bit unhappy with initial Lumia 920 batches, although the QC has steadily improved under ELOP.
