Thanks for reporting. Not sure about your second remark, but switching backlight on/off should now have a direct impact without restart (in the just uploaded version 0.0.4-4).

I am a bit reluctant, as there are plenty of stopwatch apps already, and this is not meant as a stopwatch. On the other hand it does not have a big impact on cooktimer as it is now.
Which means I did put your suggestion in my issue tracker, for reminder and later consideration.
