I don't know if KDE has ever done a commercial product, at least I am not aware of.

We are talking about stories and companies which are a bit different than Jolla.
KDE are working on a product (Vivaldi tablet): http://rhombus-tech.net/community_id...e_tablet/news/
And they just launched the Improv development board: https://makeplaylive.com (see also https://makeplaylive.com/#/who-we-are/our-commitments ).
The tablet doesn't move fast for them, but not because they have open development or their code is open. It's just a lot of work. Openness doesn't hinder their progress.

While stories are somewhat different, resources seem rather comparable.

They are not held responsible to some third parties that absolute demand for their investment for you to pay off.
Some baseline comparison can be made still. If they don't cover their expenses and can't sustain the development, nothing would work out, whether it's a community interest company or not. So we should assume, that they all plan to be sustainable. How this translates into openness of code and development is a different question.
