I'm using python2.5, this way:

export PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2.5
./configure --prefix=usr
make
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -nc

I'm using -nc with the buildpackage to make it not rebuild the source (since it is doing it wrong, i guess python is the problem)... So here is the last deb and the openal (no menus and fancy stuff):
