I have nothing against scripting languages, I fairly often still write shellscripts. And make is a kind of scripting language, too.

However, using techniques that hide your scripts from inspection and modification are pretty questionable IMHO. Just as distributing any kind of binary without sources, I feel it is a bad practice indeed.
